Fairway Primary School Environmental Monitoring

Air pollution is the largest environmental risk to public health in the UK, linked to an estimated 30,000 deaths annually. At Fairway Primary School in Stockport, our air quality team supported a student-led environmental monitoring initiative to coincide with Clean Air Day 2025, to raise awareness of air quality and how it impacts health.

A goal of this initiative was to educate the current generation about air pollution and inspire behavioural changes that could lead to healthier choices now and in the future, such as walking, cycling, or using electric vehicles. A further aim was to encourage parents and carers to make informed choices. For example, by parking farther from the school, they could reduce tailpipe emissions near children, whose lungs are still developing.

Activities led by the school’s Green Team included pledges to adopt cleaner habits and posters advocating for the same. These sparked conversations among parents and carers and reinforced the?clean air message, educating the wider school and empowering the children to become change-makers in their communities.

Using ADAhub, our environmental monitoring platform, we team gathered evidence that demonstrated the positive impact of the students’ initiatives. Our team installed three battery-operated sensors at the school and surrounding roads, capturing data in real-time. Over several weeks, the environmental monitoring sensors recorded a 79 percent reduction in pollutants, comparing data from before, during, and after Clean Air Day.

This is the latest initiative in our longstanding partnership with Fairway Primary School, where we deliver interactive lessons to years 3–6. Activities have included experiments demonstrating dispersion, explaining the sources and impacts of pollution, as well as creative sessions where students designed their own Clean Air Superheroes.
