TDOT Smart Truck Parking Availability System - Grant and Program Support
Increased safety regulations for commercial truck drivers has led to a nationwide shortage of safe and available areas for drivers to stop for mandatory rest periods. Many states struggle to balance the demand and supply of truck parking in real-time. The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) wanted to address the gap in intelligent transportation systems (ITS) programs for their freight sector. They called us in to help.
As an existing partner with TDOT on ITS and fiber deployment projects, our North American Funding Program team worked to identify potential projects for a U.S. Department of Transportation SMART Grant. We decided to apply with the Smart Truck Parking Availability System, a high-priority project that addresses a growing need in Tennessee and aligns well with SMART Grant program goals.
We supported the application with geographic information systems (GIS) data from previous work we¡¯d done with TDOT, including crash and bottleneck information, as well as freight movement across the state. This data demonstrated the project¡¯s strong alignment with the SMART Grant program. As a result, TDOT received a $2 million SMART Grant in November 2024.
We are continuing to support this initiative by providing systems engineering analysis, pilot project design, and construction support. We are also evaluating the pilot project, determining the optimal solution, and collaborating with TDOT on their Stage 2 grant application.
Once TDOT¡¯s system is implemented, commercial drivers in Tennessee will be informed of available, safe parking places for their mandatory rest periods well in advance, using direct in-cab messaging through electronic logging devices.
