Guinea Social and Livelihood Restoration Advisory Services
Our client engaged us to deliver a transformative infrastructure project that strengthens Guinea¡¯s economy, establishes advanced infrastructure, and illustrates a clear commitment to responsible development. Providing integrated environmental, health, safety, and social services, our work spanned the full life cycle of social performance¡ªfrom planning and consultation to implementation and monitoring.
Starting in one of the local estuaries, we worked closely with affected communities to develop a comprehensive livelihood restoration plan (LRP) for 33 fishing villages. The LRP included the provision of new fishing equipment¡ªsuch nets, ropes, floats, and motors. This resulted as a direct response to community consultations with affected fishermen and based on our experience supporting activities to increase fish catches.
Additionally, the LRP introduces sustainable fishing techniques and alternative fish species as part of the mid-term solutions. Training sessions are being delivered by local specialists and experienced fishermen. The plan also outlines safety training related to fishing, particularly the use of personal protective equipment, which many fishermen previously lacked due to limited awareness and financial constraints.
The next phase focusses on supporting the communities located along and adjacent to the proposed infrastructure. We¡¯re currently surveying households and talking with villagers in eight pilot communities. The LRP developed during this stage will eventually provide support for 200 villages. We have set up systems to track and share progress and are listening to community feedback to help guide project decisions.
All our activities follow international standards for land acquisition and resettlement and align with the United Nations¡¯ Sustainable Development Goals, including inclusive and supportive economic growth and industrialization.
Through these efforts, our client aims to extend the legacy of the project beyond delivering large-scale infrastructure. Their goal is to support communities through inclusive engagement, planning, and considering the full range of social and economic factors that contribute to sustainable development.
