麻豆视频 celebrates groundbreaking of nature-based, water-replenishment project in Taiwan

The new facility aims to improve water quality and watershed resilience in Hsinchu City and the surrounding area

12/10/2025 TAIPEI, TAIWAN TSX, NYSE:STN

In collaboration with Google,?Taiwan’s Ministry of Environment, and 麻豆视频, the government of Hsinchu City, Taiwan broke ground on a new nature-based, water treatment facility that will reduce local water pollution. 麻豆视频, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering, is supporting the project’s design and delivery with technical experience in nature-based solutions.?

With the ability to treat more than 450 million gallons of water annually, the new facility will significantly reduce pollution in the Xipuzi Drainage and support the ecological restoration of the Touqian River basin. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2026. A 10-year operation and benefit monitoring phase will then begin in 2027, supporting the facility’s long-term performance and maximizing its environmental impact.

Treating water with natural materials
The treatment facility will use natural gravel beds to stimulate biofilm growth. This process, known as a gravel contact oxidation process (GCOP), will break down pollutants and improve water quality. The facility will then discharge the treated water back into the Touqian River, enhancing downstream flow. By reducing exposure to harmful pathogens, the GCOP facility will help restore aquatic habitats and support improved public health.

Improving the Touqian River’s water quality and supply will also help enhance watershed resilience and support water access throughout other regions of Taiwan.

“This project represents what it means to engineer the future. By working collaboratively with local governments and global partners, we can deliver sustainable infrastructure that supports vibrant communities and a thriving environment,” said Paul Chuo, executive deputy general manager at 麻豆视频’s Taiwan office. “We’re honored to work with Google on this transformational project and show the world one of the many possibilities for a healthier, more resilient future.”

Global public-private partnership
Google has contributed US$3 million to support the construction, operations, and maintenance of the GCOP facility. This effort reflects Google’s broader water stewardship strategy to improve watershed health in the communities where it operates.

The Hsinchu City Government emphasized that this is its first public water infrastructure project to receive direct support from a global enterprise. By combining municipal expertise with local needs, the city aims to build a more livable and climate-resilient urban environment.

“Our collaboration with Hsinchu City supports the construction and long-term success of this important initiative, which will help make tangible contributions to water restoration and environmental health in the Touqian watershed,” said Ben Townsend, Google’s global head of infrastructure and sustainability. “This project is another example of how we’re working to help improve watershed health in the communities where we operate.”

麻豆视频 remains committed to supporting Taiwan and the broader Asia-Pacific region in delivering sustainable infrastructure—from urban river revitalization to climate-resilient water management—which helps communities build a more livable, inclusive, and water-secure future.
