Shaping a cleaner future through better air quality monitoring

Air pollution is a big threat to public health. In the UK, local councils often don’t know where the hot spots are and lack the data to properly respond. But with new air quality monitoring technology, that’s changing.
At Fairway Primary School in Stockport, we used advanced air quality sensors, linked to a real-time monitoring platform called ADAHub, to help identify where the problems are. This data powers initiatives like Clean Air Day, where students see for themselves how cleaner air can lead to a healthier future. If the next generation understands the causes, they can help change habits and work towards a sustainable future.
Traditional roadside monitors are expensive and provide less granular detail. Advances in sensor technology mean we can have hundreds of cost-effective, low-maintenance sensors that offer scalable, real-time insights. Imagine a community that has access to an air quality dashboard that helps plan walking routes based on clean air, not just speed.
This isn’t just about technology, it’s about empowering people. With the right data, local authorities and the public can be informed about protecting what matters most: our air, our people, and our well-being.?
